It's not really an experiment, more like an observation...although, I could probably turn it into some sort of PhD thesis.
On my daily walk, I always say 'mojn' and smile to whomever I meet on the sidewalk. Usually, the passerby just looks straight down or straight ahead and doesn't acknowledge me. Then, I threw out my white tennis shoes that screamed foreigner and now have a cool pair of grey and light blue New Balance tennies...to help me 'blend in' just a bit. I'm sure that's not really the case, but again, another observation.
Each day, I keep tabs on the number of people I meet on the sidewalk and who returns a 'mojn.' I've had some really good days where 9/10 or 6/8 return the greeting and some really crummy days where 0/8 or 1/10 return the greeting.
So, no matter how many times I smile and say 'mojn' I don't think the folks in my little town will ever warm up to someone not born and raised in this little town. Oh well, I'll keep my little midwestern hospitality flowing and maybe a few will at least smile back.
BTW, there is one older lady with a walker that I see quite often and she always returns the greeting. Little does the lady know that her smile totally makes my day!
