10 kroner here, 10 kroner there

Sometime you just have to wonder...why, oh why???

While at Bilka the other day, I bought two packages of tortillas for 34dkk (about $7USD). One package was 24dkk ($4.50USD), so by purchasing 2, I was saving 10dkk or $2USD. Oh, well, so I thought. After I finish checking out (with the self-check out), I noticed that I wasn't given the sale price. Hmmm, is it worth it? Going back in the store, waiting at the service desk, trying to explain that I was over charged a measly 10dkk. I'd get embarrassed because my Danish sucks and they would have to speak English; they'd get frustrated. No kumbayah moments. Is it worth it? Nope.

Then we stopped at Super Brugsen. Chuck needed a new velcro reflector pant leg holder for his bike. The sign says 29dkk (about $6USD). Holy smokes. 6 bucks for velcro, goodness. Ok. We get to the check out and it rings up at 39dkk (about $8USD). Great. Is it worth it? Now, she definitely doesn't speak English and she's the only one working and there's a huge line behind us and there's no service desk. It is worth it? Nope.

So, in one day, in a matter of 1 hour, I managed to lose 20dkk ($4USD). I could see a pattern developing, so I went home and stopped shopping.

  1. I definitely think putting the Dankort away for the rest of the day was the BEST DECISION! ;o)

  2. I took a packet of kanelsnegle to the checkout at Fakta the other day and the lad on duty asked me (på Dansk) if I was really sure I didn't want two packets. It turned out they were two for 10kr kroner or one for 13kr!

So it really is worth learning to speak the local language!
